Facts about weight loss, overweight and liposuction
Can obesity be treated with liposuction?
You
may have noticed how the fat in certain parts of the body is hard to lose with
diets and training. This is the type of overweight we treat with liposuction.
The areas best suited for liposuction are:
Chin, chest,
stomach, hips, outside of the thighs, inside of the knees, ankles and calves. In
women, hips, thighs and lower part of the stomach are common areas. In men,
however, the fat is often accumulated above the chest, under the chin and on the
back of the hips.
Limitations
Upper parts of the body, the front side of
the thighs, the calves and waist, are difficult to treat with liposuction. Fat
located inside the abdominal cavity (often in men) is an example of an area that
cannot be treated.
Since there is a limit of how large the doses of anesthetics we can tolerate, there's also a limit of how much fat can be removed. Removal of 1 kilogram of fat may lead to a harmless loss of blood that equals the amount lost during a menstrual period. This is why we cannot remove more than a couple of kilograms at a time. Thus, we cannot remove too much fat from obese patients (extreme overweight) because of the risks of complications.
Can the fat return?
No - the fat cells have been removed
permanently and will not "grow" back. That said, it is possible that you gain
weight later, but then the fat will return mainly be in other places of your
body.
